The end of the primary phase of education and the start of the secondary phase can be a stressful time for children and their parents. Horsmonden Primary School tries hard to prepare the children for this transition, making it as smooth and seamless as possible.
Children typically transfer to around twelve different schools at the end of Year 6. Some of these are selective schools in the surrounding towns and some are local comprehensive schools. Children can opt to sit the Kent Test at the beginning of Year 6 to enable parents to make an informed choice of secondary school. We can advise on this, using results from CAT (cognitive ability tests) in Year 4 and Year 5.
The children are prepared for the transition to secondary school throughout Year 6, for example by taking on prefect duties and through participating in the summer residential trip. They are also able to experience taster days at their chosen secondary school in the summer term.
Horsmonden Primary School liaises with the secondary schools, passing on records, academic results and details of specific support the children may have received. Representatives from the schools may come to school to meet the children.
If you have any questions or concerns about the transfer to secondary school your child’s class teacher can usually advise you. Alternatively, you can contact the school office to arrange an appointment with Mrs. Thomas (the Headteacher) or Mrs. Hickman (the Special Educational Needs Coordinator).
